It is an open standard developed and adopted by the leading tape manufacturers such as Hewlett Packard, IBM, Fujitsu and Sony for serious tape backup applications.

There are two principle LTO technologies, LTO Ultrium and LTO Accelis.

LTO Ultrium drive technology is designed for professional backup systems where uncompromising reliability and extremely high performance are the primary requirements.

With a native capacity of 100GB per tape, and a typical compressed capacity of 200GB, the LTO Ultrium provides the ideal platform upon which to develop equipment for the capture of computer based evidence.

Currently, transfer rates of 15MB/second or 30MB/second are available to meet the challenge of imaging hard drives from today's high capacity IT systems.

LTO systems are designed to be future-proof with a four generation, backward compatible, development schedule already planned. This provides confidence that images taken today will be readable into the future. Ultrium 4 drives are targeted to have 1.6TB compressed capacity and 320MB/second data transfer rates. This performance growth makes them ideal for dealing with the IT systems of the future.
